a year long course
Creative Writing in K-5 Classrooms

Fall Seminar:
Students will cultivate skills necessary to becoming teaching artists at Elementary level. Topics covered will include: key curriculum, educational benchmarks and delivery for grades K-5, as well as a wide variety of texts by teaching artists. Participants will respond in writing to required texts and translate their creative processes, as readers and writers, into dynamic integrative lesson plans in preparation for Spring residencies. This course will also include guest speakers and direct observation of classroom activity at appropriate grade levels.
Spring Residencies:
Participants will collaborate with Elementary School Teachers to create relevant lesson plans and complete a twelve week residency program including coordination of a student anthology and culminating event. Participants will also keep written accounts of their teaching and meet with instructor regularly to review progress.
Registration:

Instructor:
Laynie Browne is the author of seven collections of poetry and one novel. Her most recent publication is The Scented Fox, winner of the 2007 National Poetry Series selected by Alice Notley. She has taught Creative Writing and poetry-in-the-schools in New York, Washington, and California.
The fall seminar will meet Thursdays, 9:30 -12:00 pm, at The Poetry Center, Spring meeting times TBA.
