...promoting the most current research and practices in the teaching of writing to ethnically diverse teachers from urban and rural areas of Southern Arizona
The Southern Arizona Writing Project is a National Writing Project Site, in collaboration with the Department of English, College of Humanities, & K-16 writing teachers of Southern Arizona
The Southern Arizona Writing Project (SAWP) began in 1978. During the past twenty-eight years, over four hundred Arizona teachers have attended SAWP Summer Institutes. These past Fellows or Teacher/Consultants are eligible to be active members of the SAWP network, available to provide in-service programs in their areas of specialty to participating school districts. Since 1991, over three thousand teachers have taken workshops conducted by Fellows, demonstrating the successful multiplying effect of the teachers teaching teachers model.
The SAWP is a unique affiliate of the National Writing Project (NWP) because of the large area and diverse culture in southern Arizona. The SAWP institute is made up of K-16 teachers representing five counties along the entire Arizona-Mexico border.
It is the goal of SAWP to bring together ethnically diverse teachers from urban and rural areas so that they can learn about the most current research and practices in the teaching of writing.
